The Descent (Real Time)

The project was a collaboration between myself and the incredibly talented Luis Ruiz, who provided the fantastic beach, rock, and foliage assets. I focused on the ocean, cloudscapes, mountains, and FX elements.

I've been wanting to do a big landscape for a while and this was a solid excuse to do so. I made a water shader and my friend did some photo scans of a beach so it was kismet to make a beach scene. I'm a sucker for large geometric shape in landscapes so I knew as an fx artist, I couldn't make this just a normal beach.

Luis made the excellent beach, rocks, and foliage assets, I made the ocean, clouds, mountains, and vfx assets. I was a lot of fun to concept out and work on refining the lighting and composition on this. In particular the water shader and the volumetric clouds were super fun to work with and I look forward to using them on future projects. Houdini was used for basically all the geo I made.

The main goal conceptually was to land a sense of tension and atmosphere. I want the viewer to feel a sense of mystery and to suggest a narrative that something big is happening with out having uses characters.
